This blog is going to serve a few functions. It will be a place to post updates, photos, and share info about our growing family (and growing baby, once she's here!) So stay tuned for photos and the like.
In the past week, I have been offered baby showers in two(!) locations. I am amazed; I didn't think I'd have any baby shower, not to mention two of them! So in the coming weeks, I am also going to use this blog as a place to post updated lists of things we have and things we need, as well. I feel funny about doing a registry; we did one for our wedding, but in general a registry makes me feel consumerist and greedy. So instead, I'm hoping that some more general lists will be helpful to those who want to give us/our baby something useful. Perhaps at some point the list of things we need will include a few more specific ideas about some bigger-ticket items. At this point I am still quite overwhelmed figuring out the basics of what we need, not to mention starting to have ideas about which specific products I want. If you're interested to read said lists, stay tuned; I'm still working on figuring out what we need/want!
Yesterday my mother-in-law and I made a trip down to Portland and I went into Babies R Us for the first time. Fortunately I had a primary purpose in going, because for an expectant first-time mom, that place is really overwhelming! My mother-in-law and I looked primarily at cribs. It was nice to have someone with baby experience along to comment that all the fancy woodworking on some of them -- panels and ridges, etc. -- might look nice but would provide a place for dirt, vomit, etc. to stick and would be harder to clean. So now I know I'm looking at cribs that are either the sleigh model, with sides that simply curve out, or are just straight up plain wood tops without frills. Since I tend to like simplicity, these kinds of cribs fit my aesthetic, as well. Now it's a matter of figuring out what will be sturdy and practical... and whether we really want to get something made in the USA... and whether we want to be able to see it in-store first or are comfortable ordering something that a store carries online only. So many decisions to make!
